There are around 65 million people in the UK and about 1o million of those (1 in 6 people) suffer from anxieties, fears, phobias, a lack of confidence, lack of energy, productivity, sleep problems and generally unwell most of the time at some point in their life. Figures show that unfortunately this number is rising year on year.
So what is meditation?
Meditation teaches us how to ‘be’ & ‘live’ in the moment. Meditation is often defined as a set of techniques which are used to focus our attention and heighten our state of awareness, efficiency and orderliness. A good example of this is that meditation helps us to calm the mind and work with all those busy thoughts whirling around our heads. Many of us live busy lives and therefore we don’t take time to stop and relax. So many of us wake up in the morning throw open the curtains but never notice the beautiful sky which is in front of our eyes or the misty fog in the air. So many of us will go for a walk (or maybe walk to work) and instead of being in the present moment and noticing all the different colours, textures, smells and temperatures we are often living in thoughts of work or home life, our minds distracted and filled, too busy to notice our surroundings and live in the moment.
Meditation gives us the time to stop. Meditation teaches us to observe our thoughts without judging them it is like exercise for the mind. Practising meditation regularly can help us to be calmer, more productive in our everyday home and work life and it can actually reverse our biological age. It can help reduce stress, anger, mood-swings, anxieties, depression and worries (just to name a few). Meditation is a discipline that should be practised regularly (daily if possible) and with regular practise you and those around you will hopefully notice a difference.

“Imagine how it might feel to let each moment be just as it is” – Jon Kabat-Zinn
There are two parts to our brains the conscious mind and the subconscious mind.
The conscious mind is the part that is awake and aware of our surroundings. It’s the part of the brain that we use to think and this is the part that alerts us to our worries, fears and anxieties.
The subconscious mind is the part of the brain which records, registers and remembers information and then uses it to influence our behaviour, feelings and actions without us often realising. So if you hear over and over again that something is dangerous e.g. a spider then the chances are you will become scared and fearful of that spider causing us to run away everytime you see one. If a women hears over and over again that labour and birth is painful then her brain will retain that information until such a time as that woman starts thinking of or becomes pregnant. This fear then kicks in and some women suffer from Tokophoia (a fear of getting pregnant, labour and birth) because of the information and stories they have heard in the past.

Celebrities Meditate too:
Famous celebrities such as Huge Jackman, Katy Perry, Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, Sir Paul McCartney, Clint Eastwood, Gwyneth Paltrow, Moby, Sting and Apple founder Steve Jobs (there are a whole lot more!) all practise meditation and some do their practise twice a day!
“It is our birth right to be happy, to be alert and to actually connect with people on a real way” – Hugh Jackman–In this youtube video Hugh Jackman talks about why he does meditation.
Lets, look at meditation misconceptions. Lots of people think meditation is only a religious practise which is done by Buddhists and Hippies. People also have the idea that meditation is the same as stage hypnosis where by you are put into a trance and then told to do things e.g. cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog. Well this couldn’t be further from the truth.
During all meditation sessions you are in FULL control and can be fully alert and aware of your surroundings at any given moment (if required). People also think meditation needs to take between 45min-60mins but in fact a 5 minute meditation practise is all you need to help you feel focused, calm and in some cases re-energised. Most people who meditate do so daily and for around 20mins. Meditation is a wonderful way of calming the mind and body and when needed people use meditation to retrain their brains with positive thoughts.
Meditation is practised all over the world by a whole range of people regardless of their background, culture, or age.

Why should I work with a trained meditation teacher or attend a group class?
By working with a meditation teacher, they will ensure that you are managing to get into a meditative state – this can seem hard at first especially if you are new to meditation and do not be surprised if it takes a few sessions (and sometimes weeks) to learn how to observe what is happening and allow the thoughts to just settle and be. The teacher will teach you the techniques which will allow you to get the best out of your meditation practises and will deliver either group or personalised scripts to help you throughout your practise. By attending a class or working with a teacher they will be there to support you and answer any questions you may have. During group meditation sessions the teacher will talk about the meditation practises and then group discussions will take place – each week we think about a different topic.
What do I offer?
So, I teach individuals, couples, families and group classes at a range of venues across Bristol and North Somerset. I write all my own scripts and if I’m working with individuals, couples or families I will tailor the script to meet their needs.
Group classes are held over 4-6 weeks and have a maximum of 8 people at the Alma Road venue and 10 people at the Yanley Court venue. All classes are paid for in advance and are bookable in 4 week blocks.
Classes are held at:
The Alma Vale Centre in Clifton on a Tuesday evening from 5.30pm – 6.15pm.
Yanley Court in Long Ashton on a Wednesday morning. I will be running two morning classes the first from 8.15am – 9am (a before work class) and 9.15am – 10am.
Both these venues are calm and relaxing and just perfect for Meditation. The meditation classes will run for about 45 minutes. During the class we will do short meditation practices which will last between 5-10minutes and in between each practise we will have a short discussion focusing on a topic which has been thought about beforehand by the teacher. There is no pressure to take part in the discussions and you are more than welcome to simply sit and relax taking time for yourself.
All meditation is done sitting on comfortable chairs – if you feel you would prefer to lye down that is absolutely fine but I would ask that you bring your own mat and cushion for your head so that you are comfortable.
NB: Please note the rooms in both these venues where I will be running classes have to be accessed by stairs.
I do offer personalised programs which can be tailored to help the individuals I’m working with. The program would be discussed beforehand and I would work out a plan for the sessions. The scripts work by retraining the subconscious mind to believe what it is being told at this present moment. By allowing yourself time to relax and switch off the conscious mind, the subconscious mind takes over and the positive personalised statements used within the scripts are spoken directly to the subconscious mind allowing it to change its way of thinking.
The personalised programs include:
- A free 15 minute phone consultation.
This is so I can understand your requirements and to make sure I am right the person for you to work with. If I am not able to help I will signpost you in the right direction.
- 60 minute face to face consultation.
In this time we will talk further (and in more depth) about the issues you are having. We discuss when the issues started and what impact it is having on you life.
I then ask what the desired outcomes are you want to achieve at the end of the program. I talk through what I feel we need to do and how many sessions I think it will take.
It’s worth noting that people who currently meditate usually respond more quickly to the sessions than those who do not. However, this doesn’t mean that it won’t work. What it does mean is that I work with you and teach you how to learn and discover meditation. I generally do this by giving you a beginners script (which is still personalised) and I talk you through it. I then ask you to go off and practise the script for around 2-3 weeks so that they are fully able to meditate.
- The program.
I then put together a program. I will let you know how many sessions you need and what we will cover in each session. I usually suggest around 3-6 sessions but can increase and decrease sessions depending on what happens as the program develops.
- 15 Minute phone call – FREE
- 60 Minute consultation – £60
- 6 session package (bought in advance & non-refundable) £275
Sessions can be bought individually or in groups and are priced at:
|Number of Sessions||Investment|
|2 Sessions||£ 95|
Please note all sessions are non-refundable (please see T&C’s) and discounts will not be given if you book sessions individually. Sessions last between 60-90mins.
Personalised Tokophobia program:
I offer a 6-week meditation program to help release fears and anxieties around Tokophobia which is the fear of getting pregnant, pregnancy and childbirth.
Before starting the program, it is important that we have a FREE 15-minute phone call conversation so I can establish whether I’m the best person to help. We would then have a 60-minute consultation so that I can tailor the scripts and sessions to suit the lady I’m working with.
The 6-week program would then begin and at the start of each session we talk through how the lady is feeling and how the previous week has been. Each week I will do a different meditation script which the lady attending takes home to practise along with supporting affirmation cards. I will also ask the lady attending the program to set up a mood board for her desired outcomes. When we come to the end of the 6-week program we review the progress and the lady attending can decide if she wants anymore session (there is absolutely no pressure to have more sessions. Continuing would be charged at a discounted rate).
