What is Baby Massage?
Baby massage is when a parent/carer uses rhythmic strokes on their baby’s body with their hands. They may use massage oils such as organic sunflower oil or coconut oil to help their hand glide smoothly over their baby’s skin. These oils carry lots of benefits which are explained in my classes and in my hand-outs. The oils mentioned are safe if baby puts their hands in their mouth.
As part of a full massage routine you will gently work your baby’s legs, feet, tummy, chest, arms, face and back. You will be encouraged to play calming music and sing nursery rhymes as your are doing some of the massage techniques.
Baby massage gives parents/carers & baby quality time together and this helps with the bonding process and allows parents/carers to learn and really get to know their baby and understand their cues. Baby massage is equally as good for Dads/partners/spouses to learn, as this will allow them the opportunity to bond with their baby and for them both to get to know each other very well.
Baby massage can be built into a bedtime routine which can be good for calming and relaxing baby after a fun bath time and settle them before bed (although there are other times of the day baby massage can be built into this is purely an example).
The soothing strokes of your hands stimulate the production of oxytocin (the feel-good/love hormone) in you and baby (& even your partner if they are watching/helping) and this will help you all feel calm and bonded.
Oxytocin has many health benefits for parents/carers & baby including some of the following: helping with bonding, helping calm and soothe baby when they are upset or ill and it is also beneficial for women who may be suffering from PND(There are PND support groups which can support women – click on the links to go straight to their web pages – Tommy’s.org, PANDAS foundation, ANPIor Mind)
On a full baby massage course I will talk you through all the strokes, techniques, routines and benefits of massage. I will also give you lots of advise on the best time to carry out a massage and areas which you should avoid massaging on your baby. I will fully support you and baby.
